Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers will miss some time due to a shoulder injury, raising questions about whether Arch Manning will get an opportunity to play in his stead. Coach Steve Sarkisian gave an update on that Monday.
Sarkisian said that both Manning and backup Maalik Murphy will receive first-team reps in practice, but that Murphy was in line to start in Ewers’ place. He added, however, that Manning “will be ready” just in case.
“If the game was being played today, Maalik would start the game,” Sarkisian said, via Steve Samra of Inside Texas. “Again, Arch will be ready to go.”
Some had hoped to see Manning with the news that Ewers would be sidelined, but Murphy was the one who replaced the injured starter on Saturday. It sounds highly unlikely that Manning has a chance to supplant him in the span of a week.
Both Manning and Murphy are freshmen, but Texas has been trying to protect Manning’s redshirt status. One would imagine that will continue unless something happens to Murphy and forces Manning into action.
